BJGVJ Event: Citizens no to axing of trees

Axing announced to develop driving test center

Demanding immediate cessation of the plan of the government to axe hundreds of trees in government college for boys to make driving test center there thousands of people gathered at the public function for the promotion of healthy environment in the rose garden asked the govt. shift it to some other place outside the city. The felling of trees will further deprive the city of the green belt and affect health of the people. Warning about the impending dangers of disastrous effects of environmental degradation on our health Dr Arun Mitra General Secretary BJGVJ said that there has been steep rise in the diseases occurring as a result of this. The respiratory illnesses are rising due to poor air quality. There is an equal rise in the number of patients due to water borne diseases. Noise is another factor which is generally not taken seriously but it is causing detrimental effect on our whole body system.  Ecological degradation has led to several disasters in our country. The unprecedented loss of human and other forms of lives and property could have been avoided in Uttarakhand and Jammu &Kashmir  if effective steps were taken to preserve ecological balance in the region. He demanded that environmental laws should be effectively implemented.
Maj.(Retd) Sher Singh Aulakh, President of the Jatha expressed concern that garbage is lying on the road sides due to which there is always an imminent threat of communicable diseases. Even though we have witnessed epidemics every year there seems to be little in the anvil to meet these challenges in the ongoing rainy season. Collective action by the citizens and effective implementation of policies by the government is needed to promote healthy environment in Ludhiana, he said.
Dr. Baldev Singh-President Punjab Eco Friendly Association (PEFA) lauded the role of the Jatha for promotion of healthy environment for  the last over 22 years. However, he said  that only a joint and sincere effort by all concerned organizations working in Punjab in general and Ludhiana in particular to cope up with these challenges to mitigate the hazards of pollution on our health. He  demanded that ParyavaranVahini including the representatives of different departments and voluntary organisations be formed to meet this challenge.
MrsKusumLata – National Awardee gave a talk on water management. She said that the citizens have to be cautious about these situations.
Shri M S Bhatia – Organising Secretary said that we should go in for renewable energy resources which are in abundance in our country rather than nuclear energy which is neither safe nor economical.. We should adopt all the measures for energy conservation for sustainable development. He further cautioned that global warming occurring as a result of large number of gases accumulating in the atmosphere is a pointer to it.
Many organisations working for the cause participated and supported the efforts.
ShriRanjit Singh, Vice President of the Jatha organized a quiz competition on environment and gave prizes to the winners in the form of saplings.
Indian People’s Theatre Association (IPTA) under the direction of ShriPardeep Sharma presented a  playDHARATI MAA KI  PUKAR  on environment which was coordinated by Com. Randhir Singh Dheera and AnmolShubhamSood. The PEFA artists presented a NukkadNatak on Environment. ShriSurinder Kumar recited poems on the environment.
